22 - Notorious Religious People - Religieux notables
Bernadette Soubirous (Marie-Bernarde Soubirous 1844-1879): It is said she talked to the Virgin Mary in a grotto near the city of Lourdes, France. Since 1930, the grotto is an important pelgrinage site.
Clément V (Bertrand de Got 1264-1314): French Pope who decided to reside in Avignon (Comtat Venaissin) instead of Rome; the next 3 French Popes did the same. Clément V also gave order to eliminate the Templars. See below.
Geneviève the religious (419-512): Young none who succeeded in diverting Attila's Huns ready to destroy Paris.
Joan of Arc - Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431): The Maid of Orleans, claiming divine guidance, was 17-year old when she victoriously led French troops against the English, paving the way for French Charles VII coronation. The Burgundians captured, judged and transferred her to their English allies. She was judged again for heresy and burned at stake at the age of 19 in Rouen.
Templars Monks Order / Ordre des Moines Templiers: Founded in the city of Troyes, France, in 1129, the order was created to be the (armed) guardian of the Catholic religion. French Pope Clement V ordonned the "elimination" of the order on Friday the 13th, 1312, because of its too strong influence. Since then, Friday the 13th is "bad luck" day.
Vincent de Paul (1581-1660): Priest (Saint) who created the world first charity organization.
